Subcontracting Approval Terms by Sponsor

MIT Standard Terms (apply unless Sponsor specifies otherwise)

  • The relationship with the subrecipient organization must be appropriate for a subaward, rather than a vendor or consultant.
  • The subrecipient organization must have the appropriate facilities to be able to carry out the work, and the organization's policies and procedures must be sufficient to ensure the responsible use of sponsored funds.

Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)

  • Prior Approval required for all unbudgeted subcontracting.

Army Research Office (ARO) and Army Research Laboratory (ARL)

  • Prior Approval required for all unbudgeted subcontracting.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

  • Under Construction

Department of Energy (DOE) – Office of Science

  • Prior approval required for all unbudgeted subcontracting.

National Aeronautics and  Space Administration (NASA)

  • Prior Approval required for all subcontracting.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)

  • Under Construction

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

  • Prior Approval required for any subcontracting that would be a change in scope or is to a foreign entity.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

  • Prior Approval required for subawards, either via the approved proposal or requested post-award.

National Science Foundation (NSF)

  • Prior Approval required for all subcontracting not in approved budget; submit request through Fastlane.

Office of Naval Research (ONR)

  • Prior Approval required for all unbudgeted subcontracting.
